Home Decorating Idea – Our Newly Decorated Dining Room

Isn't it great to experience the completion of a decorating project?  We have done just that in our newly decorated dining room.  The outstanding feature of this home decorating project was incorporating a touch of red as an accent color.

This is a new house to us with off-white walls in every room but one.  The dining area of the great room has three vertical windows.  We chose window coverings that consisted of four drapery panels made out of a wool tapestry-type fabric.

The background of the drapery fabric is tan with subtle red, green and navy flowers.  The drapery panels are bordered with a fabric which is navy blue with small beige polka dots.  A cornice board about 6 inches in height covered with the identical navy blue fabric gives the window treatment a coordinated, completed look.

This window treatment is unique, but very attractive and pleasing to the eye.  Since the wool fabric is fairly bulky, we added red tassel tie backs which help tame the drapery fabric and add an additional touch of red.

There is red included in the large picture hanging in the dining room as well as in the table centerpiece.  The table runner and a matching red armless chair cover provide additional touches of red in the dining area.

Two walls are painted with an accent color in a medium earthy tan shade which coordinates very well with the wool drapery fabric.  A silk tree plant adds a touch of greenery.  Another decorating project completed; well not quite, the wooden floor needs an area rug!

The color red can be used successfully in many decorating styles.  Here are a few ideas:

Rustic Decorating – Make use of red, green and black plaid as an accent.

Modern Decorating - Basic and cool colors look great with a smattering of bright red.

Oriental Decorating – What would this style be without red luscious silk prints?

Art Deco Decorating – Red is a lively, dynamic color for this style.

French Country Decorating – Think of the touch of red in rooster collections.

Cottage Decorating – Red is a popular accent color in fabrics in this decorating style.

Mediterranean Decorating – Red combines nicely with the blue and gold of this style.

Don't be afraid to decorate with the color red.  You can always start out by using it as an accent color and see if the look is right for you.
