Easy Closet Organizing Reminders

This is certainly the time of year to start anew. Almost every magazine you see on the newsstand as well as online news has an article that encourages us to get healthier, lose weight, as well as declutter and organize our homes and lives!

I love this time of year because of the opportunity to make significant changes in our lives. Not that we can’t make changes at other times of the year, but when you take down the old calendar and put up a new one, it is a natural reminder for you to take control of your life. These easy closet organizing reminders will put you on the road to a more organized, stress-free life during the coming year.

First and foremost, for every new piece of clothing, pair of shoes or accessory you buy, get rid of at least one and possibly two items to really free up space in your closet. This applies to everyone in the family. Following through with this one tip will make a huge difference in your household by the end of the year.

Choosing the same type of hanger in each closet will give the closet a more uniform look. If two people use the same closet, use two different colors of hangers or designate a section for each person.

Is your entryway coat closet too small or too full? An attractive chest can be used in the entryway for mittens, gloves, scarves and even rolls of wrapping paper that never seem to fit anywhere else.

A general rule of no clothes on the floor will help to alleviate piles of clothing. Why do people put clothes on the floor anyway? They either go in the hamper, in a clothesbasket or on a hanger! Problem solved!

To close out the tips on handling clothing, designate a basket or bag for outgrown clothing or those items you no longer want. When it is full, take it to your local charity, get a tax receipt and write if off on your taxes. Everyone is a winner!

If you never seem to have time to clean out drawers, you can sort and organize a small drawer while you are watching television. This is a perfect solution to keeping the proverbial junk drawer under control. Enlist other family members to do the same with one drawer at a time, and you will have one organized home!
